Montréal, jour 1

Today's subject is Montréal! I was accepted to a Masters program at McGill University and decided that I couldn't make an educated decision of accepting the offer unless I spent at least a week exploring the city and the university. Thus, I arrived this afternoon, ready to experience the city's attractions and fuse myself with its urban pulse for a few days.

After only one afternoon of roaming around, I can already tell that I will leave this trip enchanted. My very first walk was along the Rue Saint-Denis, full of little French cafés and unique restaurants that served as a flavorful first impression. Apart from bringing me great memories of my childhood summers spent in France, I could instantly smell something that differentiates this city from Vancouver: Montréal has a lot of character.

Character? What in the world does he mean by "character", you might ask. Well, it's simple. To the newcomer, the city of Montréal feels authentic; if feels like it has been here for ages, and that traditions have stuck and created a true Montréal identity. Vancouver, on the other hand, feels like a city in constant transition, where every building is new or recently restored, and where most people are passengers waiting for the next reshuffle. (says he who might contribute to this)

Adding to my initial awe, my hostess Charlotte had the brilliant idea of taking me to the famous Schwartz's for an indescribably delicious smoked meat sandwich. We then walked along the Boulevard Saint Laurent, peeking into the dozens of carefully designed restaurants, and microbreweries... and I had an epiphany:

Vancouver bores me to death sometimes because its evening entertainment relies (sadly) on an ever growing network of chotchy chain restaurants! As you all know, once you've been to one Earl's, you've been to EVERY Earl's...or Cactus Club, or Joey's, or Milestone's, etc. (granted that Gastown has some fantastic places...but it's only 6 blocks long). Instead, Montréal is full of original bistros and pubs where instead of watching hockey until their eyes bleed (and drinking themselves to a coma), people are actually having conversations! Ahhh the marvels of the Latin culture!

À demain!

A Capella!

Tonight is the David Byrne and Brian Eno concert, which made me feel very musical this morning, which made me go online on a long music search, which eventually led me to this:

The Daft Punk song is magic...but my favorite is by far the Gorillaz cover. Enjoy!

Become Pollock!

This is probably the most ingenious website I've seen in 2009. (it's also a marvelous time waster for these times of high unemployment!)

note to self: I should hold a screenshot competition here to attract viewers.

Get a job, sir!

And today I realized that now that school is done, I have to find a job. Which leads me to think about what I want to work in, which means I should ideally know what I want to do in life. But today that only leads to a blank screen...and to the fourth wave of my identity crisis!

Any suggestions?

VIFF plans

I enjoy going to films by myself, especially when the place is packed because you can always get a great seat (couples or groups tend to leave an empty seat between them and the adjoining group). However, it's exponentially better when I can share the experience with someone and discuss the film. (I especially like it when I bump into someone I know in the theatre and it becomes an involuntary date)

So, with the double purpose of putting an end to phone calls asking me what I want to watch, and hopefully recruiting some of you to come with me to watch a film, here are my choices for the remainder of the VIFF:
  • When It Was Blue----Oct. 3---9.30pm
  • Chomsky & Co.-------Oct. 5---9.30pm
  • Gomorrah-------------Oct. 7---9.30pm
  • Tokyo!-----------------Oct. 8---2pm
  • Addicted to Plastic---Oct. 9---9.30pm
  • The Grocer's Son-----Oct. 10---10.30am
  • Blue Gold: World Water Wars---Oct. 10---1pm
  • The Class--------------Oct. 10---10pm

(este post se podría titular "Cruzada contra mis validas")

Boris, or the dangers of blind trust

I don't remember who recommended the Boris concert to me, but somebody made a very successful prank when they convinced me to buy tickets for yesterday's concert in Vancouver. (I have to call Rodrigo to inquire if it was him...and maybe end our friendship) I have a bad habit of buying tickets first, asking questions later that has led me to suffer through horrendous performances by new bands. Yet, nothing compares to my Boris experience.

I sacrificed the last night of the Celebration of Light to go to the concert... yes, the night where China showed the Canadian and American teams why they are the fireworks rulers of the earth. But don't get me started on that....

After walking in front of Richard's on Richards and hearing the first fireworks explode (any view of them blocked by the Yaletown buildings), I shoved my way through a crowd of leather clad Boris fans and suddenly realized I was surrounded by a mass of headbanging hardcores that made me and my skinny jeans look ridiculous. En español, me sentí fresísima.

Minutes later, the Boris guys jumped on stage, turned on their amps, and began their metal guitar noises and their shouts. The crowd went crazy and I felt just like a character in Guitar Hero, with the rhythm guitarist trying hard to follow the drummer's extra fast pounding of his Tama with equally fast riffs. It felt like an aggressive talent show band, just delivering song after song of ear busting noise. I left after the 5th identical one... the horror, the horror.

------------- Update! (August 4)

Revising my blog, I just realized that I got this Boris thing all wrong!! I did NOT see Boris that day at Richard's on Richards... it was the opening band Torche!!! I arrived late that day, (the tickets said doors opened at 8 pm) and I assumed that the band that started to play at 10.30 pm was the main event! Faaaaaak.

Walter would call me a "fucking amateur" and I would have to just bow my head in agreement.

Farewell cherry blossoms

I thought the cherry blossoms would keep their pink flowers all through spring and into summer... but no, I woke up this morning and most of them are gone. Last week, when I realized their flowers were beginning to fall, I drove down Acadia Road with my camera rolling and created this brief ode to my first cherry blossom season. Enjoy!

p.s. too bad the camera didn't capture the blue skies.
